Collection of photographs illustrative of people, buildings and civilisation in Japan, China and India, set together to describe a journey made in 1877-78 through those countries, possibly in connection with a visitation of the S.P.G. and other mission stations, together with homeward photographs of Egypt, Italy and Switzerland The collection of these photographs held in Special Collections runs to seven volumes. The first volume bears the title “Eastern Photographs” covers the entire Asian journey and was prepared for presentation to the Reverend George Shaw. Volumes 2-6 are, respectively, entitled: “Eastern Photographs: Japan 1877”; “Eastern Photographs: China 1877”; “Eastern Photographs: India 1878 Ceylon to Calcutta”; “Eastern Photographs: India 1878 Benares to Lahore”; “Eastern Photographs: India 1878 Country and People”. Volume 7 bears the cover title "Homeward photographs: Egypt, Italy, Switzerland. 1878".
The Society for the Propogation of the Gospel
Founded by Reverend Thomas Bray in 1701, the S.P.G. (the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts) was a missionary organisation of the Church of England which was active in the 18th and 19th centuries. The Society sent clergymen and religious literature to British colonies and supported educational and evangelical enterprises.
