Lord Dufferin
Hariot Georgina Hamilton-Temple-Blackwood, marchioness of Dufferin and Ava (1843–1936), was born of aristocratic lineage and married Frederick Hamilton-Blackwood, fifth Baron Dufferin and Clandeboye, in 1862. Following her husband through a long and successful ambassadorial career which reached its zenith in his appointment as Viceroy of India in 1884, she played an important role in fostering his diplomatic success. Her elegant travel writings, Our Viceregal Life in India (1889), My Canadian Journal (1891), and My Russian and Turkish Journals (1916) provide an important insight into the social life of imperial diplomacy from a female viewpoint.
